Help Democrats Take Back The House!
Dear Friends,
Celebrating the Fourth of July together, we honor our Declaration of Independence as a cornerstone document of our nation’s founding of our government of the people, by the people and For The People. Our Founders separated from a king 249 years ago today, yet we find ourselves with a President who fancies himself a king, enabled by an extremist judiciary and cowardly Republican legislators eager to surrender their own constitutional duty and authority to a bully with an extremist agenda and authoritarian schemes.
Sadly, Donald Trump’s Big Ugly Bill that every House Democrat rejected and that House Republicans passed yesterday will rip away health care and food from 20 million Americans and result in hospital and nursing home closures in every state. That Republicans insist on referring to their monstrous legislation as “One Big, Beautiful Bill” is proof that beauty really is in the eye of the beholder and that today’s Republican Party has a warped and blurred vision of what America is about. Is it beautiful to take food out of the mouths of hungry children and seniors? Is it beautiful to cut off 17 million Americans from their health care? Is it beautiful to exact this cruelty and pain on America’s working families to give massive tax handouts to billionaires and corporations already making record profits? No. This legislation is obscene. It’s sinful. It’s deadly.
On our nation’s birthday, I am filled with immense patriotism, admiration and pride for the extraordinary leadership of my dear friend and House colleague, our Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, in this critical moment for our country and for the American people. Masterfully leveraging the House “magic minute” rule, Leader Jeffries delivered a tour de force for our Democratic and American values of freedom, unity and community in a historic marathon speech of 8 hours and 44 minutes on the House Floor – ensuring that the American people know the dire consequences of the Republican’s Big Ugly Bill. With his impassioned oration, Leader Jeffries laid bare the extreme cruelty and harm to America’s working families from the deadly Republican budget and made it crystal clear that House Democrats are unified in defense of freedom and of the health and financial security of the American people.
Leader Jeffries’ powerful leadership in this moment is not only a moral and strategic act of resistance but a model of true patriotism and a roadmap for our work ahead, For The People. Democrats in Congress hold as sacred every American’s inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and understand that we were elected by the people to mind the needs of the people and honor the will of the people. We understand that equity and access to health care are fundamental to freedom in our society. We know that freedom is not just a word on a page, nor is it just for those who can afford it. We know that when you have your health and access to healthcare, you have the freedom to make decisions in all aspects of your life. That’s why Democrats will never stop fighting to Save Our Health Care – and our Democracy.
As the richest nation in the world, Americans have a moral obligation to care for our most vulnerable citizens — not to further enrich the already rich, adding trillions to the national debt, on the backs of those with the least. This budget is Robin Hood In Reverse and a betrayal of our values. Stripping health care and food assistance from millions of Americans to give billionaires a bigger tax break and curry favor with a wannabe king dishonors the vision of our Founders, the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform and the dreams and aspirations of our children.
After Republicans attacked our health care by trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Democrats flipped 40 House seats in 2018 — 31 of them in districts that Trump had just won in 2016. House Republicans had a chance to do the right thing. They failed and decided to hurt their own constituents instead. House Republicans in swing districts who voted for this abomination of a budget need to get ready to spend a lot more time with the friends and neighbors they just betrayed – when they lose their re-election in 2026. Democrats fully intend to take back the House in 2026 and elect Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker of the House, putting a legislative check on the deadly cruelty and chaos of Donald Trump and his Republican enablers in Congress.
With justice and equality in health as our North Star, we must keep speaking out, keep showing up and, as the wise words of our beloved hero John Lewis remind us, keep finding a way to get in the way of anyone who stands in our path to health, freedom, equality and justice.
