Help Democrats Take Back The House!
No, Mitch McConnell. Children, seniors, veterans and people with disabilities won’t “get over” losing Medicaid.
Dear Friends,
House Republicans passed a deadly, ugly and cruel bill and Senate Republicans have only made that monstrous bill worse – doubling down on gutting our Safety Net, kicking millions more off their health insurance, giving bigger tax breaks to the ultra-rich and adding trillions to the national debt. As Senate Republicans are trying to cram through their version of the Big Ugly Bill, Mitch McConnell, the former Republican Senate Leader from Kentucky, said this to his Republican colleagues: “ I know a lot of us are hearing from people back home about Medicaid – but they’ll get over it.” McConnell was only saying the quiet part out loud. Congressional Republicans are hoping they can gut Medicaid and the American people will simply “get over it.”
If Republicans keep trying to rip away health care from their own constituents, they will continue to face the wrath of voters and 2026 will be a repeat of 2018 when Republicans lost 40 seats and the House Majority. According to recent polling, 72% of Independents, 51% of Republicans say they’ll reject members of the House and Senate who vote for Medicaid cuts. The message from voters is crystal clear – hands off Medicaid in 2025 or lose at the ballot box in 2026.
The stakes could not be higher right now. Our health, our national security, our freedoms and our very Democracy are on the line. President Abraham Lincoln said, Public sentiment is everything. With it, you can accomplish almost anything. Without it, practically nothing. But for public sentiment to prevail – people have to know. It’s up to all of us to make sure people know that their Republican Representatives and Senators plan to sell them out.
We must continue our work to increase awareness and public pressure on Senate and House Republicans. I am so grateful to our amazing Volunteers In Politics who have been organizing and phone banking into swing House Districts for months and are now helping to connect constituents to the offices of their swing state Republican Senators.
Earlier this week, our grassroots Volunteers In Politics, led by our Save Our Health Care campaign captain Reggie Hubbard, and I were thrilled to welcome North Carolina Democratic Party Chair Anderson Clayton to a national call to discuss what each and every one of us can do to STOP Republicans, including North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis, from gutting Medicaid. Anderson Clayton, elected at 25 years old in 2023 and re-elected to a new term this year, is the youngest Democratic state party chair in the country. Chair Clayton is an organizer’s organizer and a proud rural North Carolinian. I have seen her inspiring leadership first-hand in North Carolina. In recent weeks, she has been barnstorming the state, calling special attention to the deadly threat of rural hospital closures in the Republican budget, and holding regular Tillis Accountability Canvases to let voters know what’s at stake for them if Sen. Tillis votes to cut Medicaid and other vital benefits for the most vulnerable in North Carolina.
In keeping with Chair Clayton’s guidance and the summer season, we must continue to bring the heat and shine a light so bright that those who seek to do harm in the shadows will have nowhere to hide. The Trump Administration and its enablers are masters of distraction, deception and destruction. It is a key aspect of their strategy to divide our focus and dishearten us. But we must remain focused, clear-eyed and determined not only to stop their cruel and deadly budget in its tracks but to continue to build community and to shape a better future for country that is based on care, mutual thriving and compassion for one another.
Democrats fully intend to win back our House Majority in 2026 and we only need to flip 3 seats to put a legislative check on Trump and his Republican enablers with Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker of the House.
Winning will not be easy. But we don’t agonize – we organize and we unionize.
As we hold on to our joy and to hope, we recognize and honor our collective power to create the world that we want to see. Just yesterday, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Supreme Court affirming that marriage is a constitutional right for all with the Obergefell v. Hodges decision that sprang from the drumbeat for action and moral leadership of the LGBTQ+ community. Despite relentless radical right wing attacks – including from the Supreme Court today – we have hearts full of love and pride for LGBTQ+ families!
Keep raising your voice! Keep telling your stories! Keep calling the Republicans’ own voters! It’s working. Join our efforts to Save Our Health Care by visiting SaveOurHealthCare.org and signing up to phone bank at https://linktr.ee/teampelosi.
Thank you and God bless you,
