Happy 4th of July — America’s Independence Day!
In the Declaration of Independence, our Founders set forth a vision of a government that derives its powers from the consent of the governed — guided by the self-evident truths that all men are created equal and “are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
The “pursuit of Happiness” as an unalienable right — how beautiful and how different from the Big Ugly Bill that President Trump signed into law on the Fourth of July last year. MAGA Republicans knew the harm they were causing and did it anyway — choosing to fund tax breaks for the wealthy by cutting health care and food benefits from children and the most vulnerable among us. We will never forget this act of cruelty, depravity and inhumanity.
Last week, we talked about taking back the 4th of July! Our national anthem proclaims that we must have “proof through the night that our flag [is] still there,” as our Pledge of Allegiance states, “with liberty and justice for all.”
We take back the 4th of July and save our Democracy at the kitchen table — where people vote based on what affects their lives, their economic interests and their very survival. The American people know that this President and Congressional Republicans have done nothing to offer relief from the harm and increased financial insecurity their policies have created. And that’s why we will take back the House this November!
Our Founders believed that Democracy could succeed because they believed in the goodness of the American people — and in the power of the people. So as we celebrate the 4th of July this weekend, let us be inspired to come together — not only in celebration of the holiday, but in exercising our right to demand a government of, by, and For The People — that serves the needs and respects the voice of the people.
