Help Democrats Take Back The House!

Self Defense for Our Democracy

Dear Friends,

This week, House Democrats celebrated Honor Our Veterans Day of Action on Purple Heart Day — a time to honor those who have been wounded in the line of duty. It was also an opportunity to recognize all of our veterans for their service and to reaffirm our commitment to caring for those who have sacrificed for us. I began the week with my California colleague, Congressman Mike Thompson, CA-04, a decorated Purple Heart veteran of the Vietnam war who has been leading the way in the Congress for restoration of Trump‘s cruel budget that jeopardizes cuts to veterans’ cancer care in our PACT Act, to veterans suicide prevention in the COMPACT Act and to Inflation Reduction Act tax credits.

On Thursday, I visited the San Francisco VA Medical Center. Unfortunately, recent changes made by Republicans to Medicaid and the SNAP program have made it more difficult for veterans to receive the assistance they also need and deserve.

Democrats are dedicated to providing our veterans with the highest quality care. We value the employees of the Veterans Administration and acknowledge their right to organize. Our mission will always be to leave no veteran behind. We will continue to push back against the harm that has been inflicted on veterans by the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans.

Trump Republicans know they'll lose the House after passing a sinful budget snatching health care and food from their own constituents – including our children, seniors, veterans and the most vulnerable among us. That’s why they are gerrymandering Texas to steal 5 U.S. House seats. It is an attempt to avoid accountability for their disastrous, cruel and deadly policy decisions by rigging the system for their benefit. Yet again, Republicans are showing their contempt for their constituents – putting politics over people.

Democrats won't let them silence voters by redlining the congressional map. In direct contrast to the shameful political maneuvering by current Texas Republicans to weaken communities and restrict representation, we honored the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act this week – signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson, a proud Texan. We also salute the “Good Trouble” by Texas Democrats to defend voters and Democracy.  They are “finding a way to get in the way” as our late beloved John Lewis used to say. We support them and thank them for their courage.

The president has paved over the Rose Garden. He has paved over freedom of speech. He has paved over freedom of education. He has paved over an independent judiciary – the list goes on and on. But we will not let him pave over free and fair elections in our country. California’s response to the Texas redistricting power grab is self-defense for our Democracy.

Should Texas Republicans proceed with their cynical power grab, Democrats will fight fire with fire. And as we do so, we will remember that our goal is not to retaliate but to cancel the disastrous Medicaid cuts passed by Congressional Republicans that are causing harm already. We will uplift the people and equal representation of all communities. We will honor the needs of the children and our most vulnerable citizens and we will honor our veterans. We will fight for you, we will fight with you and together we will remind these out of control Republicans where the power truly lies – not in partisan power grabs, but with the people!

The message from voters was clear: hands off Medicaid or pay the price at the ballot box. Republicans slashed Medicaid anyway. And they plan on lying about what’s in their Big Ugly Budget that gutted Medicaid, but we will keep them honest. We want Republican incumbents to know their constituents will hold them accountable.

President Lincoln said, public sentiment is everything. With it, you can accomplish almost anything. Without it, practically nothing. But for public sentiment to prevail, people have to know. That’s our job. This summer, we must own August with the truth about Republicans so that every day takes us closer to victory in 2026. And we want would-be challengers to our Democratic incumbents to know that Republicans can’t win with Trump’s extremist agenda.

As most of you know, I'm from Baltimore and proud that our national anthem was written there. My favorite part is the phrase, “gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.” Between now and the next election, all of us must prove through the night that our flag is still there – with liberty and justice for all.

Thank you for all you do.
