Help Democrats Take Back The House!
Honoring Our Heroes & Saving Our Health Care
Dear Friends,
What a full week we’ve had.
On Tuesday, we marked the 5th anniversary of the January 6th insurrection — an emotional day for all of us. Five years since the President of the United States incited an insurrection on the Capitol, on the Congress and on the Constitution. And to this day, he is still lying about his sole authority to send in the National Guard and is even trying to rewrite the history that we all witnessed. What happened then was horrible — all because his megalomania would not allow him to face the fact that he lost the 2020 election.
But our choice this January 6th was to honor our heroes — saluting the bravery of the Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police of Washington, DC, and the lives they saved. We contrast the courage of these officers with the cowardice of Mitch McConnell and Republican leadership which allowed for the President to evade accountability for his actions. No matter the lies or attempts to rewrite history, we will never stop defending our Democracy.
As we always say, we don’t agonize, we organize — for making the future better for all Americans. So on Thursday, we passed Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ bill to extend the ACA premium tax credits. Democrats know that the Affordable Care Act, proudly known also as Obamacare, is a pillar of health and financial security for America’s working families. We know that the Republican sabotage and the subsequent expiration of the ACA credits forced seniors, working families, small business owners and people with chronic illnesses to pay significantly higher premiums, or to consider forgoing coverage altogether. This clear, commonsense and urgent bill underscores that Democrats are united in our belief that health care is a right for all, not a privilege for a few — and we urge Senators to immediately pass the ACA subsidies bill.
And we need more action! While we welcome the Republicans who voted with us to extend the ACA credits, we know this mess was caused by Republicans voting for the Big Ugly Bill in the first place. Trump’s stinking ugly, lousy, rotten bill cuts Medicare and takes away Medicaid and ACA coverage from millions of patients — all to give tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans. We must keep up the pressure, calling on the Senate to pass the House ACA subsidies bill without delay and to cancel the cuts in the Big Ugly Budget vote at the end of January. Republicans have tried to ignore the will of the American people by advancing an agenda rooted in chaos, cruelty and corruption. They have shamelessly attempted to rip health care away from millions of Americans. And this week, ICE agents have shot and shot at US citizens, tragically killing a young mother of three in Minnesota, Renee Nicole Good. This brazen, shocking act which appears to have violated DHS officer safety protocols is not only tragic for Ms. Good’s family, but also sorrowful for our entire country. We demand justice — and that can only come from a thorough investigation of the facts and the pursuit of stronger controls over officer training and de-escalation tactics.
Again, what a full week we have had and through it all, I hold onto my favorite part of our national anthem, the Star Spangled Banner, “gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there.” Thank you for doing your part to make sure that our flag is still there — with liberty and justice for all.
